I will explain the fields where you can collect materials and build houses for the residents.
Fields can be released sequentially as you progress through the storyline.
Trash
Garbage or waste may be easier to understand.
There are 36 of these in every field, and removing them raises the rating of each field.
There are also quests where the goal is to remove all the trash from a particular field. One of these quests, Molly's quest in particularly, rewards you with a bag expansion, so look for it and clean it up.

You can get close and use the A button or any tool on the trash to remove it.
You will have to search the map quite a bit. Also, some of the trash is hidden behind large rocks or stumps that can only be broken with upgraded tools.
When removing them, you will be told how many pieces of trash you have removed, as shown in 1/36. It is a little hard to see because it is just a number without a background, rather than a pop-up or log with a background, but it is a good reference for the remaining trash.
Alternatively, you can check the number of trash remaining in each field on the island page of the journal.

You can jump by long-pressing the red pin on the map around the entrance to each area.
After completing Axel's quest, you will also be able to jump to landmarks in each field.
The R stick is easier to align the cursor than the cross-key.
